Kaplen JCC on the Palisades Hosts Book Study Group with Ben Nelson

Join Ben Nelson, beloved professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at Fairleigh Dickinson University, who will share his expertise and insight as he explores three popular and deeply moving contemporary works. This class brings literary-minded people together for a whole new perspective on their reading experience.

October 25: “Everybody’s Fool,” Richard Russo

In this wry, bittersweet sequel to “Nobody’s Fool,” Doug Raymer (a minor character in the first book) has become the chief of police and is tormented by the unexpected death of his wife—and his own suspicion that he was a failure as a husband.

November 15: “The Lowland,” Jhumpa Lahiri

“The Lowland” is an engrossing family saga steeped in history: the story of two very different brothers bound by tragedy, a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past, a country torn apart by revolution and a love that endures long past death.

December 13: “Nutshell,” Ian McEwan

Trudy has betrayed her husband, John, and is having an affair with his brother, Claude, and the two of them are plotting John’s murder. But there is a witness to their plot: John’s unborn son, still in Trudy’s womb, who hears his mother and uncle plan and connive. Told from a perspective unlike any other, “Nutshell” is a classic tale of murder and deceit from one of the world’s master storytellers.
