Kaplen JCC on the Palisades Holds Lifeguard Training Course for Ages 15 and Up

(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades) The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is now taking registration for its comprehensive American Red Cross Lifeguard training, where participants will learn all the skills they need to work in water safety as a lifeguard this coming summer. The course combines online training with on-site skill sessions and will provide a two-year American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED upon completion.

Participants must attend one of the following prerequisite test dates: Sunday, Dec. 10 or Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. Cost is $10. The course will then run Tuesday to Friday, Dec. 26-29, 12-4 p.m., with a final exam on Sunday, Jan 7 at 2 p.m. Cost for program is $399 for JCC members; $499 for the public, plus $35 paid to the Red Cross.

Pre-test Requirements:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:

100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick.

100 yards of breaststroke

100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke, or a mixture of the two.

  1. Timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds: Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping your face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.
