Alan Alda Entertains Hundreds at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades

(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades) Nearly 450 people packed the Taub Auditorium at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades on Sunday, April 15, to hear actor, author and science advocate Alan Alda discuss the importance of empathy, good communication and other important topics he explores in his newly released book, “If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?” Sharing one funny story after another, Alda entertained the audience with his sharp mind and quick wit, and even picked a volunteer from the audience to join him onstage for an improv exercise—and as it happened, the person he chose completely by chance turned out to be none other than JCC CEO Jordan Shenker.

Following his presentation, Alda was joined by long-time Record columnist Bill Ervolino, who moderated a Q&A that had everyone laughing in their seats. The evening concluded with an elegant dessert reception for JCC Patron of the Arts supporters, who enjoyed having their photos taken with Alan Alda. All attendees received a copy of his latest book.

Alda’s appearance, supported in part by The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation, was one in a series of ongoing programs that will be offered each year through the JCC’s Patron of the Arts program. This engaging platform provides subscribers with access to cultural arts at the JCC in new and innovative ways. Events include performances, films, art exhibitions and literary programs, where subscribers receive special benefits including concierge service, VIP ticket access and seating, reserved parking, photo opportunities with featured guests and more. The Patron of the Arts Program also supports innovative children’s cultural arts programming at the JCC, including scholarship assistance at the Thurnauer School of Music, Dance School and Performing Arts School.
