Temple Emanuel Hosts Lecture for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Sisterhood of Temple Emanuel of North Jersey will be recognizing this annual health campaign with a public lecture. Rand J. Stack, MD, will be speaking on the subject “Breast Cancer and Jewish Law” on Thursday, October 4, at 7 p.m. at TENJ. Dr. Stack is a board-certified radiologist specializing in mammography, and author of the book “The Breast Health Checklist: Simple Checklists to Keep You Organized, Informed and in Control.” In 2017, the Sisterhood of TENJ sponsored a lecture titled “What’s Jewish About Breast Cancer?” National Breast Cancer Awareness month was established in 1985 to promote awareness of a disease that represents the most commonly diagnosed cancer of women (excluding basal cell skin cancer) and the second most common cause of cancer deaths of women in the United States. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.

Dr. Stack will discuss issues of Jewish law that impact breast cancer treatment including radiation therapy, breast reconstruction, prophylactic mastectomy and lymph node dissection surgery. Dr. Stack’s lecture will also include a discussion of breast cancer gene mutations, which are 10 times more frequent in Ashkenazi Jewish women with breast cancer, compared to other breast cancer patients. TENJ is located at 550 High Mountain Road in Franklin Lakes.

Dr. Stack received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University, his medical degree from New Jersey Medical School (now Rutgers University) and his MBA degree from Columbia University. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology and practices in Rye, New York. Since 1995, Dr. Stack has specialized in mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and imaging-guided breast procedures. Dr. Stack is past president of the New York Breast Imaging Society and has lectured nationally.
