Kaplen JCC to Host ‘The Soap Myth: A Reading’

The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is proud to present a dramatic reading of Jeff Cohen’s play “The Soap Myth,” starring seven-time Emmy and five-time Golden Globe Award winner Ed Asner and two-time Emmy and four-time Tony Award nominee Tovah Feldshuh. The performance, part of the JCC’s patron of the arts program, is being presented in conjunction with The Kaplen Foundation and will take place on Sunday, January 27, at 7 p.m. The reading will be followed by a moderated Q & A with the playwright and cast. The program is a tribute to International Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed on January 27.

The play, set more than a half century after the end of WWII, explores the relationship between a young journalist and a passionate Holocaust survivor, who encourages the writer to investigate and write an article regarding the Nazi atrocity of making soap from the bodies of murdered Jews. The play dramatically explores how a survivor survives surviving and questions who has the right to write history—those who have lived it and remember, those who study and protect it or those who would seek to distort and desecrate its very existence. And finally, what is our collective responsibility once we know the truth?

“In light of the tragic mass murder in the Pittsburgh synagogue and the virulent rise of anti-Semitism, Holocaust education is more important than ever,” says playwright Jeff Cohen. “I feel a renewed urgency to fight the tide of hatred by using the weapons I possess—words and ideas.”
