YIOT to Welcome Dr. Yael Ziegler This Shabbat

The Young Israel of Teaneck will host noted Tanach lecturer Rabbi Dr. Yael Ziegler over Shabbat Parshat Mishpatim, February 1-2, as a scholar-in-residence as part of the Dr. Bertram J., z”l, and Ann Newman Adult Education Program.

“This is an exciting time for the study of Tanach,” Dr. Ziegler told The Jewish Link. “In addition to the seminal contributions of the classical mefarshim, there is a whole new range of tools available that help us understand and appreciate the word of Hashem. This, along with the ability to explore the land of Israel accompanied by a Tanach, has led to a widespread revival of interest in in-depth Tanach learning.”

Dr. Ziegler will speak multiple times over the course of Shabbat. Friday night at 8 p.m. she will speak at a private home. Her topic will be “Journeys, Wells and Marriages: When Couples Meet in the Tanach.” Shabbat morning she will speak in the main sanctuary following the 9 a.m. minyan. Her topic then will be “Esther and Joseph: Is Beauty Skin Deep?” There will be a pre-Mincha shiur at 3:45 p.m. in the main sanctuary. The topic will be “Kingship, Democracy and the Danger of Power.” Finally, at 5:15 p.m., during seudah shlishit in the social hall, Dr. Ziegler will speak about “Parenting Lessons in the Bible: Nature, Nurture and Who Is Born to Fight a Lion?”

“We are thrilled to be hosting Dr. Yael Ziegler at our shul,” said Rabbi Binyamin Krohn, rabbi of the Young Israel of Teaneck. “Dr. Ziegler is well-regarded throughout the United States and in Eretz Yisrael for her thought-provoking, in-depth shiurim. We know our members will walk away with a deep understanding of the topics covered as well as a renewed vigor for in-depth Talmud Torah.”

Dr. Yael Ziegler is a senior lecturer in Tanach at Herzog College and Matan Women’s Institute for Torah Studies. She received her B.A. from Stern College and an M.A. and PhD in Bible at Bar Ilan University. Dr. Ziegler has lectured widely on various Tanach topics in Israel, the United States, South Africa, Australia and Europe. She is the author of “Promises to Keep: The Oath in Biblical Narrative,” “Ruth: From Alienation to Monarchy,” and a book on Megillat Eicha scheduled for publication in 2019. Dr. Ziegler lives in Alon Shvut, Israel, with her husband and their five children.

The Young Israel of Teaneck is located at 868 Perry Lane in Teaneck. The entire community is invited to attend any of the talks over Shabbat. For more information, email [email protected].
