Hedy’s Hats Are Coming to Teaneck

Q&A with Nettie Berenholz, Teaneck host for Hedy’s Hats

Q: Where can I find a new hat for Yom Tov and spring? I need both something dressy and something casual.

A: On Monday, April 1, and Tuesday, April 2, come to 600 Maitland Avenue in Teaneck, 7-10 p.m. Hedy comes twice a year; try not to miss it!

Q: What kind of hats does Hedy carry?

A: Hedy has a really enormous selection of hats. The styles range from designer dressy, regular dressy, fascinators, casuals, travel hats, head bands, rain hats and more.

Q: What is the price range?

A: There is a price point for everyone. Everything from the famous brand names to casuals that can be tossed on for everyday is discounted. It’s not unusual for women to leave with multiple hat purchases.

Q: Who comes shopping there?

A: Anyone who needs a hat: Women who look for stunning showstoppers, women who prefer classical and understated styles, brides and their moms and women who love the latest trends (especially in fascinators and bands). There are hats with brims from large to small and everything in between.

Ladies who will be traveling—especially for Pesach—appreciate a beautiful but packable hat that goes right into the suitcase but does not look like it. Rainhats are available that come in handy for springtime.

Q: I’ve seen the ads before but was hesitant to go to someone’s home to shop. Will I feel comfortable?

A: Anyone would feel comfortable. It’s like a ladies night out. There is no pressure to buy. Hats are all over the place on the main floor of the house, including the kitchen! There is a lot of laughing and talking, with opinions and advice flying. There are also reunions of longtime friends, and a chance to meet new people and make connections.

There are a lot of carpools coming from Fair Lawn, West Orange, New Rochelle, Riverdale and Manhattan (and there’s plenty of free and easy parking) in addition to all parts of Teaneck, New Milford and Bergenfield. Just look for 600 Maitland Ave (between Jefferson Ave. and River Road); it’s the house with two benches on the front porch.

Q: I have a larger head size. Will I be able to order something that fits?

A: Hedy specializes in accommodating her customers. Many hats can be ordered in a larger head size or in a few different colors. Orders can be shipped directly to your home.

Q: I have a simcha coming up. Will I be able to order something to go with my outfit?

A: Yes! Try to bring along the dress or jacket to find something in the right color.

Q: Would I be able to make an appointment to come a little earlier or later?

A: Yes! Please call Hedy at 917-640-4649.

Q: Does Hedy really have a store?

A: Yes, she really does. The store is located off Avenue P and E. 13th Street in Flatbush, Brooklyn. It is bursting with an enormous collection of hats, and the colors and styles are amazing. Please call Hedy if you would like to arrange to have her there when you go. Hint: You’ll need someone to sit in the car. Brooklyn parking is not like Teaneck parking (that is the understatement of the year).

Q: Hedy will be in Teaneck for two nights. When is the best night to come?

A: Both nights, so you don’t miss anything! Hedy adds new selections on the second night. You never know what you’ll find! I hope to be seeing you! —Nettie
