Awakening to Teshuvah With Rabbi Michael Chernick

Rabbi Michael Chernick will present a series of five shi`urim in preparation for the Yamim Noraim. The shi`urim will take place at 8:30 p.m. at Shaarei Orah, The Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck, on five consecutive Thursday evenings beginning on August 13th. Classes will concentrate on classical and modern sources relating to the theme of awakening to teshuvah. Each class is a unit unto itself, and participation is welcome for the entire series or for any part of it.

August 13: “There are Those Who Merit Their World in a Single Moment”: The story of R. Eliezer ben Durdaya

August 20: What is “Complete Teshuvah?” (Teshuvah Sheleyma) A Study of Sections of Maimonides’ Laws of Repentance, Chapter 10

August 27: “From the Depths”: The Zohar and Teshuvah

September 3: “Arrows in Satan’s Eyes”: The story of Pelimo and the Devil

September 10: “There is No Reason for Hopelessness”: The Path to Teshuvah of R. Nahman of Breslov

All Classes will start at 8:30 p.m. and run approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Men and Women are invited to attend; classes are free of charge.

About Rabbi Michael Chernick, PhD:

Rabbi Michael Chernick, is a Professor Emeritus of Rabbinic Literature. Rabbi Chernick’s area of specialization is early rabbinic legal interpretation of the Tanach. Rabbi Chernick received his doctorate in Rabbinics from the Bernard Revel Graduate School and his rabbinic ordination from R. Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, both affiliates of Yeshiva University. He has written extensively about Jewish law and lore and has lectured on these topics in the United States, Europe, and Israel. He is the author of numerous articles, two Hebrew volumes on rabbinic interpretation, an English language edited volume, Essential Papers on the Talmud, and a book titled A Great Voice That Did Not Cease. He also founded the Summer Jewish Studies Program at Kibbutzim Yahel and Lotan.
