Art Exhibit Presents Generational View of Holocaust

A powerful art exhibit entitled “Generations,” presented by the Holocaust Council of Greater MetroWest, is displaying works of art, including paintings, sculpture, conceptual art and photographs by Hanna Keselman, Milton Ohring, Joanie Schwarz and Lev Gal Wertman. The exhibit is open to the public and will be on view from September 17 through November 17 at the Gaelen West Gallery at the Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus, 901 Route 10 in Whippany.

All are welcome to join an opening reception on September 17 at 2 p.m. and have a chance to meet the artists. Many of the works will be available for purchase. Dr. Irit Felsen, a Yale-trained psychologist and artist, will speak on the topic of art in memory at the reception. Her talk, followed by a question-and-answer session, will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Hanna Keselman, a Springfield resident, and Milton Ohring, a Teaneck resident, are both child survivors of the Holocaust. Lev Gal Wertman, a Randolph resident, is the son of a Holocaust survivor. Dozens of his family were murdered during the Holocaust. Joanie Schwarz, a resident of Westfield, also lost much family during the Holocaust. She was inspired to commemorate the Holocaust through photographs and encaustic photos after a recent visit to death camps.

“This exhibit is designed to reflect how different generations perceive and reflect the atrocities of the Holocaust through artistic expression. Each of these artists beautifully captures haunting elements in their work and provides us with reminders of the past and beautiful reminders of life, courage and resilience,” says Holocaust Council Director Barbara Wind.

To RSVP to the reception or for more information about scheduling a free, docent-led tour of the exhibit, contact the Holocaust Council at [email protected] or 973-929-3194.
