Pompeo at State: Strong Friend of Israel, Huge Critic of the Iran Deal

The Iranians are worried about him. The Palestinians already hate him. We’re a bit enthusiastic about him.

The “him” is Mike Pompeo, who Tuesday became President Donald J. Trump’s new Secretary of State, replacing the fired Rex Tillerson.

The outgoing Secretary of State was not in favor of modifying or scrapping the Iranian nuke deal put together by the Obama administration. Billions of dollars have been released to the terrorist state as sanctions were lifted, only to be used to fund a Hezbollah organization that every day grows into a bigger threat for Israel.

Pompeo, the former House of Representatives member from Kansas and most recently CIA director, was never in favor of the P5+1 accord, and he never missed a chance to criticize it and call for the president to decertify the deal that Trump calls “terrible.” He said, in fact, before the deal was inked by the collaborators, that the best way to stop Iran’s militarized nuclear development was to approve military strikes on its nuclear facilities instead of diplomacy.

At his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate in January 2017, Pompeo called Iran the world’s “largest state sponsor of terror.”

The Iranians on Tuesday called Pompeo an ideological opponent of diplomacy with Iran. Netanyahu already considers him a strong friend of Israel. He got praise from the Republican Jewish Coalition as a “bulwark against the aggression of Iran and a great friend to Israel.”

We wish all the best for Tillerson, even though he didn’t play a very strong role in the Middle East peace efforts, favored that the U.S. stay the course on the Iran nuclear pact and wasn’t in favor of a quick U.S. Embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Pompeo will take an active role in the Middle East, especially when it comes to the friendship between the U.S. and Israel and the security of both nations. He has always been in agreement with Netanyahu’s insistence that Iran was an existential threat to Israel and the region.

We think we’re going to like this guy.
