Our Embassy, in Jerusalem

History was made on Monday.

We’ve heard presidential candidates from both parties in the past promise the U.S. Embassy would move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Once they became presidents, however, the embassy stayed put. Typically, bending under European and Arab pressure, the words these candidates spoke, usually in front of Jewish organizations, vaporized once they reached the Oval Office.

Not this president, however. Not this time.

And because of his resolve and the resolve of his administration, including that of Ambassador David Friedman, U.S. official business in Israel will happen from now on in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.

Nobody wants to see residents of Gaza die, especially children. We hoped that the world would not be taken in by the narrative that what is happening at the security fence in the southern Negev has any connection to Monday’s Jerusalem embassy dedication.

Simply put, the violent attempts at breeching Israel’s security was an opportunity by a terrorist group hell-bent on destroying the Jewish state. That it chooses to place its own children in harm’s way should tell the world all it needs to know about Hamas.

The Palestinian “leadership” has to do better than utter tired phrases, be it “days of rage” or “Nabka.” All that the PA and Hamas have succeeded in doing is endangering its followers.

It is our continued hope that a real PA leader emerges who respects and recognizes Israel’s right to exist and is committed to building an infrastructure of peace in the region.

Indeed, Israel’s democratic leadership, based in its capital of Jerusalem, would welcome that.

And finally, these deadly acts of protest might get the attention of the New York media, but the truth is, over time they come and they go.

History will be for the ages.

The U.S. Embassy to Israel is now located where it should be.

In Jerusalem.
