To those celebrating the release of Sholom Rubashkin (“Trump Commutes Sentence of Sholom Rubashkin,” December 28, 2017) I ask that you channel your energy and join in the decades-long struggle against mandatory minimum sentences. African-American, and other minority communities have been destroyed by mandatory minimums that send men to jail for years for non-violent crimes or drug offenses. If we are to advocate for, and then applaud, the release of a fraudster and a lawbreaker like Rubashkin then we should be sure to help our friends who suffer under similar sentencing guidelines.
