Podiatrist Dr. Daniel Popowitz Joins the Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders

Dr. Daniel Popowitz, a specialist in foot and ankle orthopedics, has joined the Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders (CMD). Dr. Jonathan Lewin, MD, spine surgeon and director of CMD, said, “The community is getting a real professional with outstanding skills and personality. Tired and hurting ankles and feet no more!”

Born and raised in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, Popowitz attended Yeshiva University from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in economics. He went on to study podiatric medicine and surgery at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City, followed by a three-year comprehensive foot and ankle surgical residency at Montefiore Medical Center, University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. During his residency, Popowitz was a student of some of the most highly regarded pediatric orthopedists and foot and ankle orthopedists in the country, as well as top orthopedic trauma specialists at Jacobi Medical Center.

Poppowitz is passionate about econstructive foot and ankle surgery, diabetic foot care, sports medicine, trauma and revision foot surgery. He also provides custom foot orthotics when needed. He is an associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. His publications include articles on bunion deformities and achilles tendinitis.

Popowitz has worked at the Center for Orthopedic Specialties at Montefiore for five years. Through conservative management to surgery when indicated, Popowitz has treated it all through his “over 30,000 patient encounters at Montefiore.” In young patients, Popowitz has treated heel pain, flat foot deformities, ingrown toenails, fractures and overuse of muscles among many other disorders. In older patients he has dealt with sports injuries, deformities both congenital and acquired such as bunions and hammertoes, diabetes-related conditions, and foot and ankle arthritis, as well as many other conditions.

As part of CMD, Popowitz will treat the entire spectrum of foot and ankle disorders from toenails to ankle, both surgical and non-surgical. When asked what he is likely to encounter in the practice, Popowitz envisions a great many incidences of sports injuries in youngsters caused by overuse of muscles. These injuries should be attended to within 24 to 48 hours and CMD accommodates this need with immediate response at its Englewood and Teaneck offices. Popowitz lives in Bergenfield with his wife and children.

In an interview with The Jewish Link, Popowitz explained that podiatrists have been joining orthopedic practices because there are few orthopedic surgeons specializing in feet and ankles, and there has been significant advancement in the surgical training of podiatrists. At Montefiore, Popowitz did much of his training alongside the orthopedic residents, which is where he befriended Dr. Seth Grossman, a spine surgeon at CMD, and learned about the practice.

The Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders (CMD) is a formalized joint practice including The Center for Spinal Disorders, The Center for Hand Disorders, The Center for Pain Management and now the Center for Foot and Ankle Disorders. These centers have long worked together to provide cohesive and personalized care to the community. CMD stresses non-surgical solutions whenever possible. When surgery is indicated, CMD will utilize cutting-edge medical and surgical techniques to customize advanced treatments for their patients’ needs.

Among CMD’s providers are spine surgeons Dr. Seth Grossman, Dr. Vagmin Vora and Dr Jonathan Lewin. Pain management practitioners are Dr. Jonathan Simhaee, spine and interventional pain management specialist, and Dr. Steven Horowitz, interventional pain management. Dr. Michael Horowitz serves as the hand surgery specialist. CMD is affiliated with both Englewood and Holy Name hospitals.

An new relationship was formed between CMD and Mazor Robotics, Ltd. in Caesarea Park, Israel, in October of 2016. CMD was invited to the Mazor facility to meet with the senior executive leadership team. As a result of the visit, CMD acquired Mazor’s Renaissance Guidance System. On October 31, 2016, the CMD team of surgeons performed an in-office robot-assisted kyphoplasty with the patient under sedation, but without the use of narcotics—the first procedure of its kind in the US.

The main New Jersey office of CMD is located at 177 Dean Street, Suite 301 in Englewood. A satellite office is located at 1415 Queen Anne Road, Suite 205 in Teaneck. New York offices are located at 20 East 46th Street in NYC, 76-65 Austin Street in Forest Hills, and two offices in Brooklyn. To arrange for a consultation or appointment call 201-510-3777.
