FDU Yeshiva Program Begins Fall Classes With New Course Offerings

The Fairleigh Dickinson Yeshiva Program began the year with a new selection of courses, several taught by its former director, Professor Ira Jaskoll.

One of the new course offerings is a course in career management. “I decided to add this course to the 30 credit curriculum because I felt it is critical that the students know how to write a resume, interview properly, do elevator pitches, job hunt, network and obtain a job of their liking,” said Jaskoll.

Much of the course will be based on the twenty years of successful work as the director of the placement office at the Sy Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University. The course will look at issues faces frum students like wearing yarmulkes, leaving early for Shabbat and Yom Tov, eating out and wearing tzitzit out, to name a few. The course will also show how to include the year’s learning in Israel in the resume.

The career management class is offered Monday evening 6:00-9:30 at the Jewish Center of Teaneck, located at 70 Sterling Place. The class will be visiting the FDU career services office and will be attending the large FDU career fair in October.

Professor Jaskoll will also be offering a new class starting Tuesday, October 3, and running through October 19, from 9:00 AM- 12:30 PM for three credits. The class will meet at Cong. Bnai Yeshurun, located at 641 West Englewood Ave. in Teaneck. The class, “Real World Statistics,” will look at the hot new area of business analytics and will focus on the field of sports analytics, which is how to use data to improve the performance of a team. Such areas as “sabremetrics” and the movie and book “Moneyball” will be discussed in detail.

This course was originally developed for the FDU Silberman College of Business and is using a brand new book edited by Dr. Gil Fried, chair of the Dept. of Sports Management of the University of New Haven. Dr. Fried will be one of the guest lecturers, as will Michael Blumenthal, associate general manager of the New York Yankees, and Mark Wilf, president of the Minnesota Vikings. All students will be joining SABR, the research arm of Major League Baseball. How to improve the business performance of sports teams, arena, camps and schools will be studied.

Interested students for either class should visit FDU.edu/yeshiva.
