JEC Lower School Designates Health Week

Health professionals educated and inspired JEC Lower School students this week as part of a larger Health Week initiative.

Early Childhood experienced a bright and colorful program about the importance of healthy eating! After learning about “My Plate,” the types of food that help us grow and develop, Early Childhood students made healthy fruit and vegetable rainbow snacks, truly internalizing the need to eat a variety of colors. A special thank you to Yael Bleicher, a pediatric dietitian and JEC parent, for leading this program and teaching us the importance of eating healthy food.

Elementary School students learned about different healthy food choices as they engaged with the friendly faces from Trader Joe’s of Millburn. A huge variety of healthy snacks were introduced and sampled, including baby carrots with edamame hummus, dried cranberries and cereal. The students saw firsthand that snacks can be both nutritious and delicious.

The third and fourth graders were fascinated by Dr. Talya Gluck of Montville Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Gluck, who is also a JEC parent, explained dental anatomy and shared lots of intriguing facts. The children also learned about the importance of maintaining dental health, as it affects the entire body.

Finally, Jacqui Kimmel, a physical therapist and certified health coach, as well as a JEC parent, led a compelling presentation about nutrition and fitness for our fifth and sixth graders. She empowered our students to make informed decisions about the foods they eat. The students were shocked when they learned how much sugar is in a small bottle of soda! Kimmel discussed and encouraged healthier snack options.

It was fascinating to see the impact and awareness amongst both students and faculty as everyone learned something new. It was a beautiful start to a healthier tomorrow for all.
