Bruriah Torah Bowl Team Strikes Again

Taking the teamwork approach that’s worked throughout the school year, the Torah Bowl team finished its division as league champions and awaits its three opponents in the championship round, set for April 23. Torah Bowl is an inter-school competition in which players study the Chumash, this year sefer Devarim, including the pshat, translations and all Rashi commentary on the pesukim.

Coach Tzippy Carl explains the team’s success, “The girls really love learning, which makes me as a coach so happy and proud. While it is fun to win, the real purpose of the game is to learn and love Hashem’s Torah. The team spends hours upon hours outside of school to learn, review, memorize, question and understand the material, and some of the pesukim are not simple.”

Sophomore Hallie Gordon “Our victory would not have been possible without each and every member of our team. The teamwork displayed at the meets themselves, as well as during preparation, really adds another level to the Torah learning. We all work together to study and solve apparent contradiction between pshat and Rashi, but perhaps most importantly, we bond with each other and create Torah bowl memories (through Torah humor and Torah-Bowl jokes no one else on the planet would understand), making the experience more fun, exciting, and meaningful.”

Bruriah lost only one game during the three meets and finished the season in first place. Coach Carl said, “Working together as a team to get where they got to and the time, effort, and dedication is what makes me most proud.” The team is led by seniors and captains Ava Weitz and Doria Meiseles, who said, “The girls have spent hours studying, and it really shows through. Of course, going to the championships is validating and exciting, but the real accomplishment is all of the Torah that they have learned.”
