Bruriah Gathers for Annual School Shabbaton

Bruriah students attended their annual GO Shabbos, a weekend retreat hosted by the Bruriah GO (student council) held at the Doubletree in Tarrytown. Students eagerly look forward to this weekend, a highlight of the year which brings together students from every grade. Before arriving at the hotel on Thursday night, the seniors went out to dinner and to the mall for a virtual reality experience and shopping. Upon arriving at the hotel Friday morning, grades nine to 11 enjoyed joyous dancing and a buffet lunch and were introduced to this year’s theme, superheroes, through a music video created by the GO. Saul Blinkoff, a Disney animator and director, shared the inspiring story of his career as well as how he became a religious Jew. Each girl left his speech and Q&A session the following day with the valuable messages Blinkoff conveyed of never giving up and the importance of being sincere to yourself and others.

Friday night and Shabbos day were filled with many laughs as the GO performed a hilarious skit depicting a teacher game show and Guess-Who game. As the Shabbos programming began to wind down, faculty member Chevi Garfinkel offered an inspirational dvar Torah. Following a moving kumzitz that lasted until well after Shabbos had concluded, Principal Rabbi Joseph Oratz made Havdala. Students had the opportunity to participate in a Disney drawing workshop, hosted by Blinkoff. Motzei Shabbos was filled with achdut, song, and dance as each student was given a customized superhero cape in spirit of the shabbaton superhero theme. Grade wars were hosted by the GO, and each grade’s cheers and unity could be heard from afar. Students look forward to this Shabbos yearly, and leave the shabbaton feeling uplifted and with a stronger sense of achdut towards the girls in their grade as well as the whole school.
