(Yumacs.com) The Yeshiva University men’s soccer team kicked off the 2017 season by earning a victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth, 2-0, out in New Jersey on Friday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Alberto Benhamu was the difference maker for the Maccabees (1-0), netting two goals in the second half to propel Yeshiva to the season-opening win.

YU controlled play for most of the afternoon. Despite plenty of scoring chances in the opening half, the Macs could not break through with a goal.

In the second half, Yeshiva came out attacking once again, earning a corner kick opportunity and producing three shots in the first 13 minutes. In the 60th minute, junior forward Albert Dichy kicked a pass to the middle and Benhamu was there to launch the ball into the back of the cage to put YU up 1-0.

In the 77th minute, Benhamu struck again, by taking a feed from freshman defender Gabriel Szirtes and tipping the ball past the Eagles’ goalkeeper, extending the Blue and White’s lead to 2-0.

Yeshiva kept putting the pressure on the College of Saint Elizabeth’s defense, producing two more shots during the final four minutes of the match. The Maccabees did not allow the Eagles to have many opportunities to get on the board, limiting the opposition to just six shots during the match. YU went on to win the season-opener, 2-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Max Goldstein made three saves to earn the first shutout of his collegiate career. The Maccabees produced 18 shots during the afternoon, including eight strikes on-goal, and had a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
