Bruriah Sports Are Off to Great Start

Bruriah’s Lightning teams are off and running for their 2018-2019 seasons. The back-to-back championship volleyball team shares the top spot the B-league standings with SKA at 2-0, having taken road wins from Ma’ayanot and Shulamith-Brooklyn. With Coach Leah Pastewski at the helm, the volleyball team took the best of three sets at Ma’ayanot 25-22, 27-25 and at Shulamith-Brooklyn 25-13, 25-10. Captains Rachel Goldman (‘19) and Avigail Sheinbein (‘19) helped their team to its victories. Goldman said, “It’s such a privilege to be captain of such an amazing and close-knit team both on and off the court. Every single player on our team, whether it’s through playing or cheering, has contributed to our two championships and our seasons throughout the years. My team has learned how to play volleyball and how to have fun while doing that, which is something really special.”

Lightning JV and varsity volleyball, under Coach Christine Tucker, started their seasons on the road at SAR. JV captain Eva Lebowitz said this about the team, “My team has come so far in only three or four practices. The team energy is great and all of us get along so well, every practice only improving. We’re going to win, we’re going to lose, but I know that at the end of the season the record will be something I’m proud of because I know the amount of work behind it.” With captains, Shayna Dessau (‘19) and Mirit Fournier (‘19) the Lightning varsity volleyball team hosted Frisch, then headed to Kushner for its third straight doubleheader.

Coach Dena Lichtman and captains Tehila Hyman (‘21) and Tamar Wiederkher (‘21) are leading the way this season for the Lightning JV basketball team. The Lightning took on Frisch in a home opener and host Central next. Tehila Hyman said, “Being captain of the JV basketball team gives me an opportunity to interact with my teammates on a deeper level.” Captains Danielle Gardner (‘19) and Gabrielle Thurm (‘19) are leading the 2-1 Lightning. Danielle Gardner said, “An amazing thing about our team this year is that we are constantly looking out for each other whether on the court or off. When we are playing, we play like a team. We recognize the fact that in order to win we must do it together, passing the ball and looking for each other for assistance. I am incredibly honored and proud to be a captain of a team with such an approach.” Gabrielle Thurm said “As a fourth-year player on basketball A, I have the unique opportunity to lead the team in the way I was shown by the previous captains of varsity basketball. I already see the potential of the team and I can’t wait to help lead us through the remainder of the season.” The Lightning varsity B-league opened its season at home vs. SKA and came back from 21-9 to close the game at 35-31 before the final buzzer. Carrying the B-league team on her shoulders is senior Avital Wiener, who said this about her experience on the team, “After having the opportunity to be on the basketball team for three years, it’s my absolute honor and pleasure to represent, lead and guide my team, in my fourth and final year.” Lightning B-league faces Naaleh on the road next.
