SAR Wins Cooper Tournament ‘18

SAR High School’s ninth David Cooper Memorial Basketball Tournament took place last week in Riverdale. The girls varsity tournament welcomed teams from Denver (Denver Academy of Torah), Philadelphia (Kohelet Yeshiva) and Baltimore (Beth Tfiloh). The tournament, named in memory of a former SAR parent whose love for sports and healthy competition inspires the girls year after year.

The SAR Sting came into the Cooper Tournament as champions of the Steve Glouberman tournament and with an 8-0 in their yeshiva league season—needless to say they were the favored team. The Sting were able to dominate the court Thursday morning, and enjoy an impromptu post-game chagiga, defeating Kohelet by a large margin and replicate that win in their ensuing game against Denver.

That evening, the players headed to Broadway to see the critically acclaimed “Wicked.” The next morning, the Sting took the court against Beth Tfiloh and, in front of a gym full of students, SAR shooters were hot from three and employed strong defense, stopping the impressive shooting of the Beth Tfiloh guards. Although the competition was slightly tougher, quite literally, the Sting emerged victorious, yet again, and headed into Shabbos on a high note.

After a shabbos full of davening and bonding, Denver and Kohelet took the court and battled for third place. Their previous game ended in a DAT victory by a small margin of two points, however this game took an opposite turn and Kohelet, earning their first win, snagged third place. Next came the championship game. The first quarter was quite the nail biter! For the first time, SAR was down by three points to Beth Tfiloh, as they were looking to avenge their loss from Friday and take home the trophy. Star center Sam Horowitz picked up three early fouls, and the game took a very physical turn. It was just about as nerve wracking as it can get for the Sting. Suddenly, Bella Ingber couldn’t miss, going seven for eight from the 3 point line. She was named tournament MVP as her game, junior Sophia Reich’s ball handling and Adira Orbach’s strong drives, carried SAR in a dominant second half. Ultimately, SAR emerged victorious.

SAR would like to thank the Cooper family for all of their support and generous contributions to make such an incredible event happen.
