Frisch Hockey Team Returns to McMullen Cup Final With Win Over Dayton

Noah Petak scored five times, including a first period hat trick, and added an assist to pace Frisch to an 8-3 win over Dayton in the semifinals of the McMullen Cup Championship at Mackay Park in Englewood on Sunday night.

Frisch jumped out to a 4-0 lead before letting up a bit, allowing Dayton to score two to cut their lead in half going into the third period. Frisch would score three times in 2:27 to break the game open in the third before adding another three minutes later to ice the win.

Max Petak had two goals and an assist of his own in the victory. Jack Margolius also scored and Jake Fromen had four assists, while Jack Fischer and Judah Volodarsky had two assists apiece. Sammy Volodarsky made 18 stops, including a big save on a two-on-one that went back the other way and immediately turned into a Frisch goal.

Victor Velasquez, Joe Triano and Brendan Smith all scored for Dayton. Frisch moves on to the McMullen Cup final Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. at Codey Arena in West Orange, where they will face the combined Nutley/Columbia squad in the title game. This is the first year for the co-op after Nutley merged with Columbia High School this past year. After winning the title last year, Frisch will make its second consecutive appearance in the championship game in only their third season in the league.

Based on their regular season records, both schools have qualified for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Finals Tournament as Nutley/Columbia will participate in the public A division (more than 2000 students), while Frisch will participate in the non-public division. The tournament begins next Monday and Tuesday.
