SAR Girls Varsity Basketball Wins MYHSAL Championship

Heading into the championship game with an unprecedented record of 25-0, the SAR girls varsity basketball team looked to end the season on a dominant note. Despite facing off with Frisch already three times this season, SAR knew Thursday was the night to prove it all. SAR understood that they had to come out strong in this intense championship match up; they had to fight for every loose ball and show that they wanted this championship as the capstone to their incredible season. And come out strong they did.

SAR built a lead early on with their suffocating defense and powerhouse offense. Senior Adira Orbach scored off the opening tip, and SAR never lost that lead. SAR led 15-9 after the first quarter led by Orbach and strong defense by juniors Bella Ingber and Sophia Reich. Frisch’s Daniella Rothschild cut the SAR lead to 15-12 ten seconds into the start of the second quarter with a three pointer, but junior Samantha Horowitz began to attack the basket and was too strong on the boards, giving SAR a 29-15 lead at half time. SAR continued their relentless defense, jumping on loose balls and attacking the boards. The highlight of the game came for five of the Sting graduating seniors as they spent the last minute of the game on the court together. SAR capped their season with the 59-43 victory. The Sting was lead offensively by MVP Horowitz (25 points) and Orbach (23 points) and junior Oliva Weinstein (four points).

After an admirable undefeated regular season, two tournament wins and a dominate playoff performance, the championship was the perfect ending to what was an unbelievable season, finishing 26-0.

A special thanks to SAR’s wonderful coaches, head coach Tali Zelenetz and assistant coach Shaina Gross, for all their support and guidance along the way.
