Kushner Wrestlers Keep on Winning in North Bergen Tournament

Livingston—Kushner’s first-year wrestlers competed in the North Bergen Frosh Wrestling Tournament last Sunday. Though the flu took its toll on the team’s numbers, cutting them in half, the four boys that attended represented Kushner well. Wrestling at a tournament comprised of both public and prep school teams, whose participants typically have wrestled many years longer than Kushner’s, Yacov Billinson, Eli Setton, Zach Setton, and Yair Tennenberg did the team proud. Billinson and Tennenberg placed 3rd in their respective weight classes and the Settons wrestled tough, showing much promise for the future.

The remainder of the team attended the prestigious North Bergen Wrestling Tournament, geared toward more experienced wrestlers, this past Sunday. Kushner was one of 26 teams that competed in this huge tournament, with a total of 325 wrestlers. Though the team was small in number due to winter break, the nine wrestlers that attended represented Kushner extremely well in 6 of the 14 weight classes. Kushner managed an amazing 7th place team finish out of the 26 public and prep schools. The team sent three wrestlers to the finals: Max Chosak in the 120 pound weight class, Yoni Uvsitzky at 126 pounds, and Menashe Shershow at 182. Chosak placed an impressive 2nd, putting his tough opponent on his back several times and nearly winning the match in the 3rd period. Uvsitzky wrestled a fantastic tournament, defeating several very tough wrestlers, finally losing in the finals and taking 2nd place. Shershow steam rolled through his opponents, pinning his way through the tournament to take 1st place. Several other Kushner wrestlers also performed well, falling just short of the top place winners.

The team has come a long way since the start of the season and looks forward to representing Kushner, with heart and determination, against stiff competition in the Wittenberg Tournament next month.
